A Great Night at the Midway Drive-In!

Last weekend I hosted this year's Flashback Weekend annual Dusk to Dawn Horrorfest at The Midway Drive-In and it was one of the best yet.

The Midway is located an hour and forty-five minute drive outside Chicago in charming Dixon, Illinois. The annual all-night horror moviethon in September marks the end of the drive-in season at the Midway and every year it's pretty special.

This year was no different. The four terrific films this year were “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Phantasm,”  “Piranha,”  and “Terror Train.”  What a line-up!

Below are some pictures with captions from the evening. All in all, it was a glorious night and the perfect way to end the summer.

And hey, mark your calendars for the next Dusk to Dawn Horrorfest Marathon in May 2025 when Mike and Mia officially open up for the summer next year. Once again, I'll be your host and I promise, this one is going to be even more SPECIAL!

Nick and Julie before the show
That's me and my girlfriend Julie getting ready for a full night of chills, laughs, food, and fun. And yeah.... she is WAY out of my league.

Nick turning on and tuning into the portable radio
Tuning into the station on our radio to get the sound for the movies. Bringing a portable, battery-powered radio is a very smart thing to do. It will keep you from draining your car battery and possibly needing a jump after the show (which Mike and Mia provide if required).

Mike Kerz showed us some of the frames of the 35mm trailers and concession ads that night. It was so cool!

Here's another view of our great spot at the Midway, where we watched some awesome horror movies for the next 8 hours!

the cooler stuffed with the food for the night
You can bring food into the Midway if you buy a $10 Food Permit, but that shouldn't stop you from grabbing some stuff at the great concession stand. We got some popcorn and a bit of candy, and no visit to a drive-in is complete without a Corn Dog. Which I had later.

parked cars under the full moon behind some clouds at night at the drive-in
It was a lovely moon, so we shot it between films while chatting with our neighbors and visiting the concession stand—so much fun.

Freddy Kruger masked creature behind the concession stand
And since they were showing "A Nightmare on Elm Street," it's only fair for Freddy to help out at the bustling Midway concession stand. Adding to the atmosphere of the already joyous night.
