As you all know, Tiramisu is an Italian dessert that actually translates to "pick me up," or "cheer me up," and a good Tiramisu can certainly do that.
This classic treat is made with ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with mascarpone, eggs, sugar, and cocoa. And, yeah....it is delicious.
I've noticed lately that there are suddenly a TON of Tiramisu flavored treats scattered throughout the local grocery store, and because I would do anything for my dear readers (and NEWSLETTER subscribers hint, hint), I decided that I would sacrifice myself, and taste test a few of these items.
So, on a recent trip to the "Jewels," I found an 11.78oz package of the new "Tiramisu Flavor Creme Oreo Thins," and they look amazing.
I also picked up a 6.74oz bag of "Dove Silky Smooth Promises" W/Milk Chocolate Tiramisu Flavored Caramel...again, they look incredible.
And, on a half empty display near the front of the store, I found a weird looking "Tiramisu Lollipop" that doesn't seem to have an origin or a proper label, but hell, I'll give it shot.
First up is the Dove Silky Smooth Promises. These are your basic bite-sized, caramel-filled chocolate candies from the excellent chocolate company known for their tasty and high quality sweets.
Now, the whole "Smooth Promises" thing comes from the fact that each individually foil-wrapped candy comes with a printed, uplifting message on the inside of the foil.
I didn't realize this until I had my third piece piece of candy, and suddenly noticed the writing on the foil, just as I was about to scrunch it up and throw it away.
The messages vary in sentiment and corniness, with some being kind of sweet, whiles others are just obnoxious. But, hey, it's a nice gesture that plays like a Fortune Cookie, only much, much harder to read.
Anyway, we all know that Dove makes fantastic chocolates, and these Tiramisu flavored caramels are no exception...they are excellent.
The flavor is rich and sweet, the texture is gooey and smooth, and the overall experience of eating these things is terrific, but, there isn't a very strong coffee flavor that should be very prominent in any Tiramisu product, and as a result, it's very tasty, but not very authentic.
Overall....OF COURSE I would eat a ton of these things, but they aren't truly and authentically Tiramisu strong.
Next up, the Tiramisu flavored Oreos Thins.
Now, I am in the minority on this, but I much prefer the Thins to the regular Oreos because I find that there is too much cream filling in a regular Oreo (don't even get me started on the ungodly Double Stuffs, which I find almost inedible).
The Thins have a beautiful and perfect ration of filling-to-cookie, and they go down smoother and crunchier than the regular classic Oreo.
The question here, of course is, is the Tiramisu flavoring any good, and is it a genuine authentic recreation of the Italian dessert?
The answer here is a resounding YES! These things are DELICIOUS!
Crunchy, creamy, and tasty, just like the Oreo always is, and the Tiramisu flavor is simply out of this world!
The lovely intricacies of the coffee, ladyfingers, mascarpone, and sweetness jump onto your tongue immediately for a true, awesome Tiramisu punch that impressed me to no end. I could easily eat an entire package of these things...and luckily, I have a bottle of milk right here, so I'm good to go. Outstanding!
Next is that weird, anonymous lollipop, that was lying on that creepy little display of what seemed like, The Island of Misfits Sweets. It says Tiramisu on the label, so I trusted that what it was.
It looked awful (misshapen, melty, with unattractive sprinkles indiscriminately scattered like it was a candy crime scene) and I was suspect immediately.
And, it turns out I should have been suspect....this thing was terrible.
The texture was glumpy and unpleasant, the taste was plastic-like, and I'm still not sure what the flavor it was supposed to be, but it certainly WAS NOT Tiramisu! It wasn't even Tiramisu adjacent, or Tiramisu-like, or chocolate-like.
I don't know what it was, but I do know it sucked, and I that downed the rest of my milk to get the taste out of my mouth.
So, there you go, a full report on the latest Tiramisu flavored treats available at your neighborhood "Jewels."
The Dove candies were tasty (because, well, they ARE Dove chocolates), but not very Italian dessert-ish. But, boy did those Oreos RULE!
As a person of Italian descent, I can say unequivocally, that those cookies are Tiramisu Gold, and should be eaten immediately!
